Khana Khazana is mall/supermarket based, veg only Indian snacks and sweets restaurant franchise. This branch inside the venerable Spinneys supermarket on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street in Mankhool is located where the Audio/Video store used to be. Although not that old, Khana Khazana has an old school feel to it. And that may be because owner, Ramesh Bhojwani, a Dubai veteran of 35 years (and also the person who also owned all those audio/video stores), wanted to remind us of the way things were in old Dubai. Whatever the reason, I liked the restaurant’s down-to-earth interior.
Preparing my Pani Puri Interior The tray Pani Puri in all its glory This is the AMAZING spiced up bhel puri Looks good but the original bhel puri was too bland for me Ramesh Bhojwani (left) and his famous chaatwala on the right A view from Spinneys
It’s the pani puri people come here for so I first ordered that followed by a bhel puri. Whilst not the best, the pani puri is definitely better than most I’ve had in Dubai; the puris are crispier, the potato-based filling is chunkier and the imli pani is sensational. I loved it. I found the bhel puri bland and dry by comparison. Ramesh said that was because he thought, as a non-Indian, I wouldn’t be able to handle the heat of a full on bhel puri. Bring it on, baby! is what replied. And they did. If the pani puri was good, the bhel puri was amazing – you must try both. This fabulous low key place is well worth a visit.
