Vasanta Bhavan is one in a long list of South Indian 100% vegetarian restaurants with the Bhavan suffix; other notables being Saravana, Ananda and Sivestar. This Discovery Gardens branch on the ground floor of Building 20 on Street 1 is the third of their four branches I have visited so far. It’s also the first time I have visited for lunch rather than breakfast. Like the other branches, the interior here is presentable and most importantly, clean and cool. I felt it was also the most upmarket of them all.

Vasanta Bhavan offers two thalis for lunch, North and South Indian (not surprisingly). This was my food brother, Soheil’s first non-Gujrati thali. I suggested he try the North Indian one as it would include dishes and flavours he was more familiar with like daal and paneer in makhani sauce. I had their fantastic South Indian thali (I have a weakness for the sambar here). To drink I ordered him a fresh lime soda and a masala chaas for myself – both delicious. I also ordered a curd rice to help Soheil cool down. It was so good I ended up eating most of it myself.
South Indian thali with puris Super spicy masala chaas (that’s Soheil’s fresh lime soda in the background) North Indian thali with naan We all know what that is, don’t we Delicious curd rice And to finish it all off, masala chai
The food at Vasanta Bhavan has been consistently good across the three branches I have visited. Service too is friendly and accommodating. There are a number of very good South Indian restaurants in Discovery Gardens, most notably Mami’s Illam, Saarangaa Bhojan Shala, Hari Prasad and Amma’s to name the heavyweights. Although one of those four is my favourite, Vasanta Bhavan is no less of an option and is well worth a visit.
