Wemart is a newly opened, authentic Chinese food court a stone’s throw from the Deira Clock Tower. For a Chinese food lover like me, it is nothing less than Disneyland. Wemart is a supermarket first and then an eatery but you wouldn’t think so if you walked in on the ground floor where you are greeted by a multitude of cooking stations ranging from hotpot to ramen, from dim sum to noodles, from wok fried mains to seafood – Disneyland. There used to be a seating area in the middle but that’s gone now – tables and chairs replaced by cash and carry style wholesale islands. The actual supermarket is upstairs on the first floor – Disneyland.
I’ve had almost everything at Wemart but I think I liked the hellishly hot chilli chicken, stir-fried lamb, fried rice and fried noodles we had on the first day the best. The hotpot was very good too – even a day later from the fridge. The ramen style noodle soup station is insanely good but doesn’t work a day later as the noodles suck up all the stock (hot pot doesn’t have noodles). All I can say is go out and try this place out. I guarantee you won’t come away disappointed. I kept an eye open for how seriously they took the C-19 regulations and I’m happy to say – very.
If you’ve brushing up on your culinary skills over lockdown and fancy yourself as a budding Ken Hom, the first floor of Wemart is where you want to go to source your raw materials. Everything under the sweltering desert sun is available from Oink to giant Alaskan crab, fruit and vegetables, sauces and noodles – you name it, these boys have it.
In addition to the basement there’s plenty of parking on either side of the stand-alone building. And just to make it even more irresistible – it’s open 24 hours. In a year of perpetual downers, this is one MEGA upper and well worth a detour.
