Wingstop Inc. is a Texan chain of nostalgic, aviation-themed restaurants specializing in chicken wings. Believe it or not there are no less than eight branches scattered around Dubai, including this food truck parked besides Feras Sweets in the Apex Atrium Center in Motor City. The number of delivery bikers mulling around suggested that it’s almost entirely geared towards home deliveries and the odd take away; there is nowhere to sit and eat…even now that the weather has cooled. Driving home from our son’s flat in Motor City, my wife and I decided to pull over and add to their “odd take away” stats. Unlike in other parts of Dubai where you have restaurant runners come and take your order, I had to physically get out and walk over to place ours. Not a problem or an imposition – just a bloggers observation.

Speaking of which, my bloggers curiosity got the better of me when ordering and I ended up with four sets of four: an 8-piece combo with 2 four-piece add-ons. The variants were Original Hot, Louisiana Rub, Lemon Pepper and yes, the feared and fiery Atomic. Our favourite of the lot was the Original Hot which comes doused in a tingly-tangy bright orange hot sauce precariously similar to Frank’s Buffalo sauce (which I love). Dipped in the miserly portion of Ranch sauce which came with the order, the otherwise hellishly hot (even by my outrageous standards) Atomic was easier to palate. It’s wise to save some of the Ranch sauce to apply to your lips to cool them after Atomic – the man in the truck did warn me. Neither of us liked the Lemon Pepper. All the wings were plump, juicy and well cooked.
Atomic! The fries were really good Original Hot is BEST
I was not impressed with their packaging which, in addition to still using polystyrene containers (guys!), made no provision for the wings with sauce. As a consequence, they arrived in an absolute mess; the ones with rub were fine. I liked the fact that plastic gloves came with the order as they really do make the aftermath of eating piping hot, ooey-gooey wings much, much easier.
Gloves are great Super messy Stop using polystyrene containers
Ordering from the truck was a cinch; the young man who took my order was very pleasant and patient. You order from one end and pick up from the other – the whole process took no more than 10 minutes but the 80 Dirhams it cost for sixteen wings did cock an eyebrow – excessive. I would think twice before ordering from them again because a) I make excellent wings myself and b) for almost the same money I can get a bucket full of fried chicken….and I have Frank’s Buffalo sauce in the pantry.
