Patiala House is an Indian restaurant which specialises in Punjabi cuisine and chaat. It has two branches, the original in Karama and this one at the base of the Glitz 1 building in Dubai Studio City. I’m told the restaurant was opened well before the 2011 Bollywood movie of the same name, so where did they come up with the name, I wonder? Anyhoo, its interior is bright, colourful and cheerfully designed. There’s a chaat cart (say that as fast as you can three times…) on the left as you enter which not just caught my attention but had me salivating before I was seated. Restaurants usually don’t serve chaat in the morning – these boys do – we’re going to get along just fine, I thought to myself.
Interior Pani Puri The chaat cart Unlimited non-veg thali
Of course, I ordered some chaat to start, Pani Puri to be exact. Oof! The pani puri pani (pani puri water) had such an amazing kick. I then moved on to their non-veg thali which included a chicken tikka masala (how NOT Punjabi), some lovely daal, aloo, raita, rice and chapatis. Oh, and a gulab jamun. Nothing fancy but each a cornerstone of what I would call Indian comfort food, and each very well done. So, although unadventurous and lacking the variety of other thalis, I liked this thali…especially when you consider that it’s only 21 Dirhams. In fact, I liked everything about Patiala House – the interior, service and of course, the food. Remember people, this is the only place in the neighbourhood which serves chaat.
