Aarey’s Kitchen is a newly opened South Indian restaurant in Barsha. Located in the Eros House building around the corner from Delhi Darbar, its interior is simple, clean and dominated by a glass enclosure which looks into the kitchen. There’s also a small sweets and chaat counter which, unfortunate for my sister and I who were there for breakfast, only starts serving from mid-afternoon. Why is chaat only served in the p.m. anyway? Why can’t someone have chaat in the morning? I think Bhel Puri would be fantastic for breakfast. Moving on…

I ordered my usual Idli-Vada dip while my sister ordered a Masala Dosa; less oil, extra crispy and with the potato ‘masala’ on the side. I asked for mine to be followed up by an Onion Rava Dosa. To help wash it all down, I asked for some Filter Coffee while Pari ordered the Masala Tea with Ginger – a runaway favourite, we were told by their articulate, multinational executive-turned-restaurateur manager. My idli-vada arrived first and wow! it was right on the money; the idli fluffy, the vada crunchy and the sambar tangy with just the right amount of pungency. Pari’s Dosa was crunchy, yes, but it was oily and absolutely saltless.

I had to remind them about my Rava. I shouldn’t have because by the time it arrived, we had finished our tea/coffee and ready to go. And guess what? It was totally saltless too. Yeah, I guess I could let one saltless dish go but two – no way. So, as friendly and charming as the manager was, and chop chop as his staff were, the fact that they slipped on two of the three dishes we ordered means I can only give them a Ravenous Rating of 2.5/5.0 and that’s a pity because I think they are deserving of a higher score, maybe even a 3.5/5.0.
