Madras Vegetarian Restaurant is a 100% vegetarian South Indian restaurant in Hor Al Anz. Located beside the NMC Hospital near the Abu Hail metro station, the restaurant has ample (paid) parking immediately in-front with spill-over in larger lots on either side. Its interior is split between common and family sections and is clean and cool, and on the Friday morning I visited, was heavily scented with burning incense.

The idli-vada I started with was served within minutes of my ordering and, the light, fluffy idlis in particular, were obviously freshly made. The sambar was really good too which may be why I felt the bowl it was served in was too small. Refills are free upon request. My masala dosa was equally good, as were the two chutneys which came with it. I simply loved the filter coffee I was then served mainly because it wasn’t overbearingly sweet as some other restaurants make it.

The staff at Madras Vegetarian are smiley and fast as opposed to being overtly friendly. One of the highlights of my meal was watching this distinguished looking, elderly gentleman sitting behind the cash counter (probably the owner or manager) quietly manage the staff with eyebrow gestures and head nods. One eyebrow raised, sideward nod – go see what that table wants. Both eyebrows raised, full head bob – did that customer just walk out without paying!? Ha! Good food, good service, great entertainment makes this restaurant well worth a visit.
