Dapoer Kita (Indonesian for “Our Kitchen”) is an authentic Indonesian restaurant on Street 43A, behind Lulu Hypermarket in Karama. A recent change in ownership has seen its simple interior repainted and some of the menu changed – that’s it. Why fix what ain’t broke? One usually associates affordable, authentic Indonesian with Betawi but it’s Dapoer Kita which has always been my favourite of the two. It’s interesting that every time I have visited this modest little restaurant, I have been the only non-Indonesian there.

The daily buffet
One can choose from a daily buffet (which I haven’t yet tried) or from their colourful menu. I am a sucker for their satay, chicken especially, which I feel is as good as Betawi’s, and better than newly opened Little Bali’s in JLT. I’ve tried and enjoyed their Soto Ayam (recommended by one of their staff), a clear chicken and glass noodle soup which is served with rice. Their Mie Goreng Ayam is superb but it’s their Nasi Goreng which is my all-time favourite. I though the Nasi Goreng at Little Bali had nudged it into second spot so I came back to refresh my taste buds – Dapoer Kita’s is still my number one. Ask for a little sambal to have with it – OMG!

Service at Dapoer Kita is friendly and accommodating, and their staff all speak fluent English. I mentioned this specifically because they can help you with your order as they did with me (the Soto Ayam is an example). Not everyone is acquainted with Indonesian cuisine; I personally know little beyond the classics: Satay, Mei Goreng, Nasi Goreng and Rendang. These guys will help you explore. Dapoer Kita is in every sense a true hidden gem. Irrespective of where in town you are, the next time you fancy an authentic Indonesian meal, consider this amazing little restaurant in Karama. I think its worth a detour.
