Griller, not to be mistaken for Grill-O, is a newly opened fast food franchise in Barsha (opposite MOE, beside Mr. Crab) which specialises in grilled Peri Peri chicken as well as fried style, baked, battered chicken which they claim, tastes just like fried chicken. And you know what? it’s actually similar to KFC original only with a less crispy skin. But what it lacks in outward crispiness it makes up for with inner moistness. This is especially noticeable with the breast, which was miles better, for example, than the bone dry breast I got at Chicken Cottage in Jumeirah. Factor in the health benefits of baked vs fried and you have a compelling case.

The Peri Peri chicken is equally healthy because it’s grilled. I tried mine with the one-from-hottest sauce they offer and enjoyed it. Here too the chicken was cooked perfectly. All Peri Peri chicken restaurants, from masters Nando’s to wannabes; Griller, Grill-O, Galito’s, Chicken Cottage, etc. have their own sauce concoctions so finding the ‘right’ one is really a matter of preference. My personal favourite is Nando’s (especially in the UK). Back in Barsha, Griller also offers burgers, wraps, lamb chops and kebabs.

I found the staff at Griller friendly and attentive. Perhaps that’s because I was lucky to have been looked after by their lovely assistant manager, Chat, who went to great lengths to explain the health benefits of their grilled and baked chicken vs the others. She also told me that Griller is opening a second branch at Meraas’s Box Park soon. Box Park, really? Good luck with that. For now though, if you’re craving fried chicken but like me have to be careful with your diet, Griller’s fried style baked, and/or Peri Peri grilled chicken may just be the answer.
