Lao Che Chuan Taste Cafeteria in the China Cluster of International City is the closest you will get to a full-fledged, authentic Chinese ramen restaurant. The restaurant is run by a single Chinese lady who…you guessed it, doesn’t speak a word of English. But don’t let that stop you from going there because she has an English menu which is easy to understand which she uses to correspond with her Chinese one – communication in its most basic (and satisfying) form.
The food is far better than the cosmetics of the restaurant suggests. Both the spicy braised beef and chicken noodle soups were superb. The noodles are handmade in-house from wheat and egg and are delightfully stringy and chewy. There are two bowl sizes with the large filling but not as big as Wagamama’s.
We enjoyed our noodle soups so much that we decided to try their wonton soup as well. Neither the wontons nor the broth they came in were as good as I was hoping. I wouldn’t waste time or money on them. Stick to the noodles which are excellent.
Lao Che Chuan is very much a hidden gem for connoisseurs of authentic Chinese ramen. Don’t be put off by the way the restaurant looks (it’s spotlessly clean BTW). Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Waste NOT. Want NOT.
