The Al Karya Bakery in Jumeirah Village doubles as a small, rough and ready restaurant. Two or three tables share floor space with a Pepsi fridge display and a floor standing air conditioner. Enter and you’re greeted with smiles from behind the counter of an open kitchen which is dominated by an industrial looking oven in the background. Nothing about the visuals suggest a 4+ Zomato rating.
I was there to try their breakfast and stepped into the restaurant nose first looking forward to the homely smell of a bakery – nothing. Half an hour past opening and they were still in prep mode. I should have left and come back another time. Instead, I ordered the unusual Eggs with Awarma (lamb confit). Unfortunately, their purposeful looking, stainless steel faced oven had only just been fired up, so I wasn’t able to try any of their baked products, which kind of defies the purpose of coming to a bakery in the first place.
The scrambled eggs and preserved meat were a dried-out, salty disappointment leaving me to wonder what all the fuss over this little eatery was about. It certainly wasn’t about their breakfast because even the fresh flatbread which came with my eggs were not right. And what kind of place offers breakfast without tea or coffee?
Maybe these guys simply aren’t morning people. So, where breakfast is concerned, I would consider other options.
Waste NOT. Want NOT.
