Sagar Ratna is a 100% vegetarian, Rajasthani restaurant in Cluster R, JLT. Located at lake level, it specialises in Rajasthani thalis as well as authentic Jain cuisine.
My food buddy, Ashwani, and I went to sample their thali…and were disappointed. Although a gazillion times better than the rubbish they serve at 800Thali in Cluster B (our other major JLT let down), it’s still a far cry from what you get at Maharaja Bhog, Rasoi Ghar or Rajdhani. And that’s because what they serve at Sagar Ranta is the most basic form of Rajasthani thali, comprising of Dal Bati Churma (and ghee), Gatta Curry, some pickles, and little else.
You also get chapati or two and some (good quality) rice. No veggies. We actually ordered a bhindi masala extra; I wish we hadn’t, it was terrible.
Most Rajasthani’s will argue that what they serve at Sagar Ratna is as authentic as it gets. Maybe so, but come on, include some sabzi for goodness sake.
Service was good; friendly and fast. Our bill for two came to a whopping AED100, including the bhindi, a lime soda and an under-spiced jal-jeera. Unless you are a die-hard Dal Bati Churma fan, I would consider other options.
