The Desert Wok is an Indo-Chinese restaurant in Jumeirah Village Circle. I have not physically been to the restaurant, I ordered a home delivery instead. The young Filipino gentleman who took my order on the phone was courteous and patient, talking me through their menu. Our order was delivered within the one hour he promised, and arrived well packed and still warm.
The delivery boy had change. He too was polite and respectful. That’s where the good news ends I’m afraid.
The veg spring rolls were without doubt the worst I have ever tasted – ever. Even Jack, our eat-it-all Beagle, turned his nose away.
We ordered two noodles, Egg Hakka and Cantonese. And a Mixed Fried Rice. None were remotely close to other Indo-Chinese restaurants in occasionally order from, Chin Chin and the Monk.
The Duck in Plum Sauce promised much but turned out to be dry as a bone, thankfully it came with a generous amount of sweet plum sauce.
It was left to the Crunchy Beef to save them a little face; it turned out to be the least bad of lot but still well below average.
But where the Desert Wok failed in quality, it made up with in quantity – portions are BIG. And this alone may ensure they stay afloat. Because if it were down to the quality of their food, they would have shut down already.
Fancy a decent Indo-Chinese? Consider other options.
