West Lake Spring is an authentic, unlicensed Chinese restaurant near Nasser Square. Located in the African Bank Building near Jesco Supermarket, it is one of several Chinese restaurants to cater (almost exclusively) to the growing Chinese tourist industry in Dubai. Operators bring Chinese tourists in by the busload. The interior is modest, well-used, and stereotypically Chinese, with round tables (with revolving centrepieces) adding to the authenticity.
This old school restaurant does not specialise in the cuisine of any specific province, focusing instead on traditional dishes with the broadest possible appeal. Unless you are with someone Chinese, or have past experience, do not try to decipher the menu on your own. Ask for help. Thankfully, there are English speaking wait staff who are extremely friendly…and patient, who will help you place our order. The food is very good. I enjoyed the slightly spicy and garlicy seaweed salad (a must try), as well as the wok fried noodles. I’d avoid the dumplings unless you like Chinese Five Spice.
Prices are surprisingly competitive, a feast for two will cost you under AED100, making this a restaurant well worth a visit…whichever way you look at it.
