Biryaniwalla & Co is an authentic biryani specialist chain of restaurants from Hyderabad. Owned and managed by dashing Tollywood star, Reza Ashtarian, the restaurant brings Hyderabad’s distinct style of dum pukht biryani to Dubai. This Abu Hail branch is one of four branches spread across town – all look like flagships (=well decorated) and are easily identified by their massive signboards.

Hyderabadis know a thing or two about biryani and these boys do not disappoint, their signature Zaffarani Mutton Biryani is one of the best in Dubai. I love this specific biryani for its subtility, for the tender pieces of mutton hidden like treasure at the bottom of the layered saffron scented rice.
Their other biryanis are equally good. Don’t expect a Pak Liyari style double masala, heavy metal onslaught on your tastebuds – these biryanis are more classical. But biryani is not all Biryaniwalla & Co is about, try their amazing kababs, especially the chef’s special, Irani Jujeh Kabab, or the lightly spiced, melt in mouth, cooked-on stone, Pathar-ka-Gosht. I usually start with a mixed grill (pictured).

The staff are friendly and infinitely accommodating. Note, I know Reza Ashtarian personally, but I did not tell him I was visiting this branch, wanting to see how the food and service were without the “special treatment” I know I get when I’m with him. It’s comforting to know that they were as good. So, if you’re looking for an authentic Hyderabadi meal, highlighted by dum pukht biryani and kebabs which won’t break the bank – Biryaniwalla & Co is definitely one to consider.
