Daefi is the lobby restaurant at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers hotel. It is where one usually enjoys afternoon tea and coffee – not morning breakfast. But C-19 has changed so many things in the world, the mighty Jumeirah Group included. Although ET has only recently reopened, it is not operating at anywhere close to pre-C-19 levels so many of its F&B outlets remain closed, its all-day dining restaurant Mundo included. So bizarrely, breakfast is now served at Daefi – à la carte.

The finely dressed waiter smirked mischievously when I asked if he thought the chef knew how to make an Indian omelette. Of course he does sir, he replied, he’s Indian; just tell me how spicy you want it. Surprise me, I said. And he did, with one of the best ‘masala omelettes’ I have had in a long time. I’m on this low everything diet so I didn’t have any of the croissants, toast, tarts, etc. which came in the breadbasket nor did I have any fruit (including the avocado) but the one which broke my normally gluttonous heart was the beautiful hash brown my omelette came with. Oh man!

I must say that it was a little strange eating a meal in that famous lobby. But as with all things associated with the Jumeirah Group, everything from the ambiance, to the service to the food itself were simply amazing. Yes, it was a little pricy but in this instance, I was a guest so who cares…
