Umami, which translates to “pleasant savoury taste” in Japanese, is a constantly improving mall-based franchise which serves affordable, casual, street food style Japanese favourites ranging from ramen to sushi. The Umami menu is extensive and will appeal to most – even those who are not Japanese food fans. Although there are now many restaurants serving (close to) authentic ramen in Dubai, I always find myself coming back to Umami for theirs. A word of caution, when having ramen, it’s best not turn up in a new shirt!!!
This Umami branch located in the Level 3 Food Court of BurJuman Centre Extension is the fourth I have been to in Dubai. I tried the Chilli Garlic Ramen this time. It uses a hearty miso base broth (chicken I suspect) spiced with chilli oil which I simply loved. Protein was provided courtesy of slices of extremely fatty beef; this would normally be pork, but the beef worked just as well. I’ve also tried their Chicken Cutlet Katsu which is also surprisingly good. If on a low carb diet, I suggest you avoid their noodles and rice and instead try their excellent salads which come with a tangy, very Japanesey dressing. I have never tried their Sushi. I come for the ramen and on this occasion in particular, I have left fully satisfied. Worth a try.
