Kınacı İşkembe Salonu is a restaurant which specialises in offal, tripe and giblets. You wouldn’t think so stepping in, there’s absolutely none of the pungent smell associated with such restaurants. In fact, for those none the wiser, it’s just another middle-class Turkish restaurant. And like most restaurants in the Küçükçekmece neighbourhood, it’s well-appointed and spotlessly clean.

Only Lloyd ordered offal, the Arnavut Ciğeri to be specific. It’s a Turkish dish made of oil fried lamb or veal liver cubes seasoned with hot pepper served traditionally with onion and parsley, and he enjoyed it tremendously. I ordered the most common form of grilled köfte, Izgara and our Azeri companion, Asghar, ordered the minced meat filled Kavurmalı Kaşarlı Pide. The köfte was good but the pide – OMG – delicious. We ended our meal with a cheese filled künefe served drenched in sugar syrup and two istikans of chai each.

Service was typically Turkish – friendly, fast and accommodating. Look beyond the fact that it’s offal, tripe and giblets which Kınacı İşkembe Salonu is famous for – this is definitely a multi-talented restaurant where one can enjoy a wide range of Turkish favourites including, I must add, one of the best chicken soups I have had. Well worth a try if you are in the area.
