Thakkaaram is a Keralite restaurant in Garhoud. Located next door to the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, itself next door to the venerable Aviation Club, Thakkaaram’s interior is humble yet smarty appointed and spotlessly clean. There is plenty of RTA parking (214 C) available over the weekends although finding a spot during the week can be challenging.

I was there for my routine weekend South Indian breakfast and, as always, ordered an idli to start (they didn’t have wada). I found the idli light and fluffy and the sambar tangy and full of vegetables. The chutneys were delicious too. My masala dosa arrived folded not rolled (for some weird reason I prefer my dosa rolled). Whist the dosa itself was crispy, I found the potato ‘masala’ too sweet and not to my savoury preference. What made up for the dosa, however, was the extra-strong fresh milk tea (less sugar). Wow! it was easily the best I’ve had this year.
Beautiful idli Folded dosa Potato ‘masala’ was too sweet for my liking The best fresh milk tea I have had in a while
Service was outstanding. I was well looked after from the minute I walked in, attended to by a smiley young man by the name of Aromal.

He and an equally cheerful chap behind the till (constantly taking orders on the phone) ran the restaurant with a delicious feel-good flavour I already long to go back for. So, although the dosa was not to my liking I still recommend this little eatery in Garhoud…for the idli, sambar, fresh milk tea and most importantly – the smiles.
