The Selfish Bull is a licensed surf and turf restaurant near Ain Dubai on Bluewaters Island. Enter its well-appointed, American steakhouse style interior and you will find it hard to choose which to stare at first, the giant glass enclosed wood fire oven and grill on the left or the floor to ceiling aquarium teeming with live seafood as you enter on the right. There’s an upstairs too but it was closed on the evening we visited. It was sad to see no one else there.

The food at The Selfish Bull was very good for a restaurant not firing on all cylinders. I shared a unique-for-Dubai, Louisiana-style seafood Jambalaya with an associate while my other two guests ordered the surf and turf option (with lobster) and fish and chips; the latter different from anything I’ve seen in Dubai because the fish used is kingfish rather than cod, haddock or, popular in this part of the world, hamour. I liked the Jambalaya; its aromatic creole spices perfectly complimenting the generous serving of seafood on rice. I don’t know what it is with people who order their steak well done. I mean, why? As such my companion complained his steak was dry. Really?

Keeping staff motivated in an underperforming restaurant is difficult. I was pleasantly surprised therefore to find the staff at The Selfish Bull not just friendly but attentive. The pretty hostess at the front desk was a little uptight and curt but if I looked that good, I’d probably be showing everyone my nostrils too. The menu’s slightly steep prices are off-set by fresh ingredients and a talented kitchen. I really hope this place picks up. It has all the hallmarks of a hit restaurant. A happy hour special wouldn’t hurt. Worth a visit if a quiet weekday dinner is what you’re looking for.
