Sikka is a homegrown Emirati themed restaurant-café concept which encompasses and entwines the cuisines of the UAE, Iran and India into one. Interiors of Sikka eateries, including this one at La Mer, are very special. Homely, simple and elegant they embrace the best of each society without being too retro and overburdenly nostalgic. The added value this branch has is its beautiful terrace overlooking the warm waters of the Gulf, which is simply lovely to dine or lounge out in (even now).

The food at Sikka is surprisingly good. Between the three branches, I have had everything from breakfast to dinner, and now Iftar. Iftar at the La Mer branch is off a fixed menu, which I prefer, as opposed to a buffet (which is available at their City Walk branch). Buffets simply get too crowded. Funnily tea is not included in the Iftar menu. I asked for a cup of hot water. The rest of the meal is a choice of starters, mains and desserts. I loved the Persian Soup-e Jo option I opened my meal with; it is a cream of chicken and barley soup hugely popular in Iran. The mixed grill I ordered for my main would have been excellent had it not been let down by the colourless, tasteless Jūjeh (chicken) Kabab. Everything else was top notch though.

Service at Sikka is excellent; friendly, attentive and accommodating. My special thanks to the team who looked after us, headed by assistant manager Abdul Karim. No one knew I was a blogger. They were just doing an amazing job. I find it uncanny how all three branches of Sikka excel where ambiance, food and service are concerned. Well done to whoever at Meraas is managing this outfit. It’s outstanding and well worth a visit for breakfast, lunch, dinner and now Iftar.
