Once Upon A Bite is one of a growing number of trendy new restaurants which have been popping up in Karama and Oud Metha, focused on serving the food young Indians eat in India today, and not just the curries, thalis,
biryanis, etc. we outside India stereotype as Indian.
When I first started writing restaurant reviews, I used the phrase Chindian to refer to Indo-Chinese food. Well Chindian has branched out and specialized into Chindian from Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi to name but the big tickets. Once Upon A Bite specializes in what is commonly referred to as Chinjabi (Chinese food with a Punjabi twist) – how cool is that?
Once Upon A Bite’s interior is cheeky, cheerful and colourful, and not dissimilar to many of the other recent start-ups such as Bol Gappa, Rajdhani Street and Kulfiholic – The Mumbai Social. It’s almost as if the same designer had a hand in each…or perhaps there’s a common funky restaurant template circulating on the internet.
I thoroughly enjoyed the food at this popular Karama eatery. Everything I had either reminded me of my youth or the street. My order for one consisted of Punjabi Chili Sausage, Roadside Egg Bhurji and Street Style Maggi with a Spiced Orange Juice to wash it all down. Trying to pick a favourite, I find I can’t – all were equally good. That said, I think I preferred the noodles at The Bhukkad Café more than the Maggis here.

Service is super friendly and infinitely accommodating. It’s with good reason that Once Upon A Bite has chalked up such high Zomato rating in such a short space of time. I think this is one of the better newcomers and well worth a visit.
