Hing Kee could very well be Dubai’s first Asian Barbeque Pit. Located in the recently opened Streetery Food Hall (itself a first in Dubai) on lake level of Cluster D in JLT, this little charcoal master will grill you everything from portobello mushrooms to chicken satay. Hing Kee is one of three outlets in the all-Asian Streetery, the others being Fat Aunt and those bad boys from Business Bay – Zen. There’s an instantly believable honesty to the place, it captures the spirit of Asian street food better than any other similar outlet I have been to in Dubai. Kudos to the owner/s.
The food at Hing Kee is Smokin! (pun intended) yet my favourite dish was one which did not touch their hot coals – Hainanese Chicken Rice served with authentic condiments and sauces. This is the best chicken rice in Dubai and something I am sure I will go back for (very soon) – mix in a little of that gingery chilli sauce with your steamed rice, break in pieces of perfectly cooked chicken…and on the side you have that beautifully fragrant, clear chicken broth – comfort food nirvana.
My wife, son and I also tried their amazing Thai BBQ Chicken and the equally good Chicken Satay which was served with one of the best peanut sauces I have had. Both are must-try dishes.
Note, in real Asian street food style, food is served as it is prepared so you could get a main before a starter but that’s just part of the appeal of this food hall eatery.
Service was friendly, accommodating and prompt. If you like authentic Asian you will love Hing Kee which, along with stablemates Fat Aunt and Zen, are well worth a detour.
