The Malabar Majlis, next door to the Capitol Hotel on Al Mina Road in Al Hudaiba, is a South Indian restaurant which serves the worst Sambar I have had in a while. I found the restaurant itself clean and that includes the appearance of the smiley staff in their beige uniforms. Its interior was very typical of this type of cheap and cheerful eatery with a fruit juicing/tea/coffee section in the front which you could see into through a small serving hatch, and a wash basin in the rear.
The problem was the Sambar. It simply wasn’t good. And this ruined the rest of the meal for us. The Vada and Masala Dosa themselves were actually not at all bad. In fact, their Dosa was perfect for my age group as it was not at all oily – shabash to the chef. And their Tomato Chutney was amazing, truly one of the best I have had. But that’s where the good news ends. How can you have Vada and Dosa without Idli? (no, they didn’t even have Idli) and then go and serve it with gloppy sambar. No, no, no.
So, if you are looking to have a good South Indian breakfast which includes Idli, Vada, Dosa and good Sambar…consider other options that the Malabar Majlis Restaurant.
